Reflections on Career Transitions in the World of Survey Res

The profession of survey research is dynamic and diverse, composed of professionals from academia, the non-profit sector, for-profit research organizations and government entities. Although similar in their use of shared methodologies and theoretical principles, these workplaces frequently operate with different cultural norms and expectations. Professionals may often change jobs within fields multiple times throughout the course of their careers and these transitions can be challenging, stimulating, and rewarding. This webinar presents three survey professionals who have traversed multiple career tracks throughout the course of their careers. The presenters discuss their career transitions, focusing on the challenges they faced and the insights and skills they wish they had known prior to making these transitions. This webinar is targeted towards students, early and mid-career survey researchers, or anyone interested in advancing their careers or changing career tracks.

Remote Web Survey Design and Usability Best Practices

Usability testing in survey research allows in-depth evaluation of how respondents and interviewers interact with self-administered questionnaires. For example, a respondent may understand the question and response options but may be unable to select their answer accurately on a small screen. Although there is a growing body of literature on best practices for web surveys and mobile devices, not all design guidelines work equally well for all surveys. Thus, it is critical for researchers to test with real users and modify surveys as part of the pretesting process. Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, researchers are now faced with the additional challenge of conducting questionnaire pretesting remotely. In this webinar, we will discuss best practices for conducting remote usability testing, including both moderated and unmoderated testing. We will use examples from our work and provide demonstrations using different software tools.

Reproducible Report Generation using Markdown

I will discuss markdown as a simple language to create formatted text, and extensions of markdown that incorporate statistical code and its output, such as statistical results, tables, and graphs. Examples of simple markdown documents will be presented, and extensions such as parametric R markdown documents that can use different data sets or different filters will be discussed. Some familiarity with R will be helpful, to the extent of general understanding what R code does, but all the steps will be explained. Students will be encouraged to run their own markdown examples.
