Usability testing in survey research allows in-depth evaluation of how respondents and interviewers interact with self-administered questionnaires. For example, a respondent may understand the question and response options but may be unable to select their answer accurately on a small screen. Although there is a growing body of literature on best practices for web surveys and mobile devices, not all design guidelines work equally well for all surveys. Thus, it is critical for researchers to test with real users and modify surveys as part of the pretesting process. Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, researchers are now faced with the additional challenge of conducting questionnaire pretesting remotely. In this webinar, we will discuss best practices for conducting remote usability testing, including both moderated and unmoderated testing. We will use examples from our work and provide demonstrations using different software tools.
